Early Representation

By June 2024, the Public Defender will reduce by 10 the average number of days in County Jail for eligible clients incarcerated at the County Jail for more than 24 hours without access to counsel through its early representation program.

Visit eligible clients at County Jail before their first court date, offering services, and completing an intake process designed to promote early release and offer supportive services. Work with the Watsonville Police Department to provide people cited or arrested for misdemeanors with a bilingual information card inviting them to contact the Office of the Public Defender for legal help. Staff regular office hours in Watsonville to provide early representation to interested and eligible candidates. Conducting outreach to raise awareness of the Early Representation program. Collect, process, and analyze data to measure outcomes to ensure our programs result in net benefits for our clients and community.
