School Truancy

By June 2024, the District Attorney will collaborate with stakeholders, including the County Office of Education, community-based organization (CBO) youth services, Health and Human Services, Probation, and the Public Defender, to reduce the rate of truancy by elementary school students by 10 percent and reduce the chronic absenteeism rate of students in first and kindergarten by 20 percent.

Collaborate with stakeholders outlined in Education Code § 48321, including the County Office of Education, local school districts, local law enforcement agencies, CBO youth services, Health and Human Services, Probation, and the Public Defender. Conduct an analysis of existing truancy data, including focus groups of parents and students, to assess root causes of increased truancy. Identify strategies based on analysis most likely to keep students in school and reduce truancy. Test strategies using a plan, do, study, adjust framework, and assess the efficacy of each.
